"A stunning acoustic tour-de-force… a group at the top of its game"
Sing Out! (USA)
“Deliciously uncool”
Daily Telegraph
From Carolan to Vivaldi, tangos, ragtime and sparkling originals… oh, and not forgetting a selection of beautiful songs. "The wicked and wonderful Mandolinquents” (BBC Radio 3) play absolutely anything that tickles their fancy on mandolins of all sizes as well as violin, guitar, 5-string banjo and voices.
“A demon on the mandolin, an angel on the fiddle” is how Irish Music Magazine described Simon Mayor in the wake of his recent album Carolan. Simon and long-time partner, singer and mandobassist Hilary James, have gathered together a wonderful cast of musicians from very different musical backgrounds to perform his arrangements of Ireland’s musical icon Turlough O’Carolan and lots more besides.
The band appears in a new line-up featuring classical multi-instrumentalist Elias Sibley (mandolin / guitar / ukulele) and from the world of bluegrass three-time UK banjo champion Richard Collins (banjo / mandolin / guitar / bass).
They’ll be venturing too into English songs, fiddle tunes and even a singalong, all wrapped up in Simon’s dry banter… and squeezed into 45 minutes!
“One of those groups that defies pigeonholing… effervescent… exotic… altogether it’s just plain fun”
The Living Tradition
“Top quality musicianship and accompanying humour. A find of true class… highly recommended to anyone seeking a 21st -century example of British wit and skill”
